Islamic Terrorists Issue Threats Against Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI went before Germany's Muslim community and, condemning terrorism, urged Muslims to join Christians in the fight against terrorism. A Spanish newspaper and television station received FAXed threats against Pope Benedict XVI, noting the Vatican shift from "The tendency ... to not take part in numerous wars" to "The Vatican ... has moved to support the Christian side of the countries in the world, and if possible, the Catholic side."

A Vatican press office official said "The statements are not based on fact, but the threat could still be very real."
