A computer operator in Orange Country, California, worked in an environment where employees were allowed to post personal, religious and political messages inside their cubicle. When this employee posted a bumper sticker that read "Marriage = man + woman" his supervisor ordered it removed because it was "offensive". Shortly afterwards the employee was reprimanded and demoted.
The employee contacted attorney Laurie Messerly, affiliated with the Pacific Justice Institute, who informed the employer of their discriminatory position, but the employer did not comply. Messerly noted, "It is appalling that some employers think they can silence workers based solely on their viewpoint. We are confident that the justice system will right the wrongs done to this employee."
