A native Wiccan high priestess in Great Falls South Carolina, Darla Wynne, sued the Great Falls Town Council for uttering the name "Jesus" in the council meeting prayers. The case was appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which declined to hear it. So, according to the town's lawyer, Michael Hemlepp, it is against the law to utter the name "Jesus" and he recommended that officials obey the law.
The South Carolina Attorney General, Henry McMaster, informed the US Supreme Count that the name "Jesus" was used in these prayers since the formation of the state.
Herbert Buhl III, the attorney for Wynne, warned officials that uttering the name "Jesus" in prayers is a violation of the law and anyone doing so "would do so at their own peril".
Reverend Mike Sollers of Evangel Temple Assembly of God noted the decision was "a sad day in America."
