US DOJ Sues NYC Schools to Stop Religious Discrimination

The Bronx Household of Faith is a church in need of a facility. The church turned to the New York Public Schools to rent space for their services. Organizations are allowed to rent the school facilities but the New York City Board of Education has refused to rent to the Bronx church.

The U.S. Department of Justice sued the New York Public Schools to end their religious discrimination. According to Eric Treene, the DOJ's Special Counsel for Religious Discrimination, "The Supreme Court has held time and time again that providing equal access for individual religious expression by students does not violate the Constitution -- that, in fact, this is constitutionally protected speech -- and that you may not discriminate against student expression simply because it's religious."
