Bethany Hauf, a student at Valley Community College in Victorville California, provide her English instructor, Michael Shefchik, with information about the paper she was beginning to write. Shefchik, an atheist, informed her of one limitation - “no mention of the big “G” gods, i.e., one, true god argumentation.” Hauf received a 49 out of 100 for her paper, because her reference to “God” was considered offensive.
The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) has stepped in, writing a letter to Patricia Spencer, president of the college, indicating “the actions by the instructor reflect a profound hostility toward religious expression and his actions clearly violate the constitutional rights of our client," and requesting a re-evaluation of the grade.
