A measure was unanimously approved by the Virginia general Assembly that would protect prayer as "free speech" under the First Amendment of the constitution. The measure is now pending the signature of governor Mark Warner.
The bill, sponsored by Robert D. Orrock Sr, was introduced as a result of the ACLU arguing that it is illegal for government officials to pray. No one declared it illegal for the lesbian pastor to use the opening prayer time to promote homosexuality and chastise the legislature.
