Shawn Byrne requested a personalized plate which said "JOHN316". The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles has rejected his request because it is "deemed to be a combination that refers to deity."
According to Anthony Duprey, attorney for Mr. Byrne, "When officials suppress speech because they don't like the message of the plate or the viewpoint it expresses, that's illegal discrimination."
