Calling the School Dance "Christmas Dance" too Religious for Some Pennsylvania Students

The student sophomore class officers and Principal's Cabinet of Conemaugh Township, Pennsylvania, recommended to the school board that they vote on renaming the "Christmas Dance" to the "Winter Formal." Some students would not be attending because the word "Christmas" has religious implications.

At the board meeting, Susan Saylor-Stahl, school board President, reminded everyone that Christmas is a recognized secular government holiday. Board member Patricia Lucas-Bailey added, "I respect everybody’s religion — I really do. But it’s an extracurricular activity."
