Director Ridley Scott has released his latest film, Kingdom of Heaven, which is based on the Muslim/Christian historical period known as the Crusades. The film depicts the "Christian Extremist" and the Muslims who attempt to co-exist with them. According to one of the leading experts on this historical period, Professor Jonathan Riley-Smith of Cambridge University, the film is "rubbish, it's not historically accurate at all."

Historian Bernard Lewis notes, "The Crusade was a delayed response to the jihad, the holy war for Islam, and its purpose was to recover by war what had been lost by war - to free the holy places of Christendom and open them once again, without impediment, to Christian pilgrimage."
Robert Spencer, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades, states "the Crusades have grown into a myth that little resembles reality."
