Lt. Gordon James Klingenschmitt, an Evangelical Episcopal Church priest, has been at-odds with the Navy over his Christian beliefs. The Navy has disagreed with the aid and support Klingenschmitt has provided to Jewish sailors. The Navy has also tried changing his Christian beliefs and messages. As a result, Klingenschmitt was forced from active duty and off the missile cruiser where he was serving. His situation is an example of several lawsuits by evangelicals against the Navy.
