Margo Lucero, an Eighth-grade counselor, was filling-in for the absent principal Kathleen Norton, and lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance over the public-address system. Lucero took it upon herself to rewrite the "One Nation, Under God" portion of the pledge of allegiance to be "One Nation, Under 'your belief system'." This caused confusion among the students and complaints back to the principal. Principal Norton was apologetic for the incident but Lucero was not.
Lucero said "It was not my intent to offend anybody; rather, I wanted to include everyone." The spokesman for the Jefferson County Public Schools, Rick Kaufman, said "It was inappropriate. It won't happen again."
