George Washington's prayer for our country is that we imitate "the Characteristics of the Divine Author of our Blessed Religion."
The United States has a rich history and religion and Christianity are deeply embedded. By todays standards, even the most secular of our founding fathers would be considered too religious. Unfortunately the role of religion has been twisted into the present unconstitutional "Wall Between Church and State."
According to Gordon Wood, a professor and historian of early America, when it comes to how secular our society has become, the founding fathers "definitely did not contemplate this kind of what we might call 'extreme,' where a minister or a rabbi at a public school graduation is considered to be a violation of separation of church and state. We have built that wall much higher than any of them, even Jefferson, would have anticipated."
