Within the Spokane, Washington Police Department is a program called the Chaplain Volunteer Program. It's purpose is to help police officers and families after critical incidents occur. The chaplain uniform included the police emblem over a golden cross. Ray Ideaus, an atheist pastor (now there's an oxymoron), filed a federal lawsuit against the chaplains, arguing it is unconstitutional for chaplains to wear a religious emblem. Under pressure of this lawsuit, the city has agreed to, not only remove the patch, but to also allow non-religious people to become chaplains. The head of the chaplain board called this an attack on Christianity.
