Churches have to Sue to Legally Expand their Facilities

The Court Street Christian Church (CSCC) of Salem Oregon was established in 1914. Since 1950, CSCC has occupied a facility that can accommodated a capacity of 325 people. But CSCC has grown beyond that capacity. CSCC presented their proposal at the city council public hearing public. Approval of the CSCC proposal has been stalled, so CSCC has sued Salem under the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act - claiming, by denying the expansion plans, the city discriminated against CSCC.

A similar lawsuit is under way - The Church of the Hills in Bedminster, NJ has sued the Bedminster Board of Adjustment.
