ACLU Represents Wiccan Supreme Court Case to Pray at Chesterfield VA Board Meetings

Cynthia Simpson, a Wiccan priestess, requested to have her name added to the list of people who offer prayers before the Chesterfield VA board meetings. Her request was denied. Chesterfield County officials limited the prayers to Judeo-Christian beliefs and religions based on a single god. The Wiccan faith is a multi-deity religion. A federal judge ruled against Chesterfield in 2003. In 2004 a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit in Richmond reversed that decision.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
