Members of the Christian Medical Association, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Fellowship of Christian Physicians Assistants would refuse to perform an abortion because of their own conscience. In December 2004, George Bush signed an amendment that forbid state and local government from discriminating against such practitioners. California Attorney General Bill Lockyer wishes to strike down this amendment. According to Steven H. Aden, legal counselor from the Christian Legal Society Center for Law & Religious Freedom, "California is trying to use this lawsuit not only to strike down the Weldon Amendment but also to take steps to completely nullify any right of conscience in California."
