J. Matt Barber was a manager for Allstate in Illinois. On his personal time, Barber wrote an article on homosexuality based on his Christian beliefs. Allstate responded to the article by escorting him from the building and suspending him from his job - an assistance VP of HR informed him his column didn't reflect Allstate's views. Three days later, Barber received a phone call telling him he was fired for writing the article. Allstate attempted to prevent him from receiving unemployment benefits but the Illinois' Dept. of Employment Security disagreed.
