National Motto "In God We Trust"
Does Not Violate First Amendment

The national motto "In God We Trust" appears over the Davidson County Government Center in North Carolina. Two attorneys who regularly practice at this location filed a lawsuit claiming the display of the motto violates the First Amendment. A U.S. District Judge ruled to dismiss the suit and to retain the display. The ruling was appealed and a three-judge panel upheld the dismissal of the lawsuit.

Judge Robert King, a member of the three-judge panel, stated "In this situation, the reasonable observer must be deemed aware of the patriotic uses, both historical and present, of the phrase 'In God We Trust'."
